Alfred
Heaton Cooper
1864–1929
Alfred Heaton Cooper was born in Bolton, winning
a scholarship to study art in London. Influenced by Turner, Constable,
Millet and the Barbizon School, Alfred was first inspired by painting
mountain landscape in Norway before deciding to make the Lake District
his home. To earn his living as an artist, Alfred tramped the Lakeland
fells painting scenes to appeal to tourists, while his wife Mathilde
looked after the studio.
