MEMORIES OF TIMES PAST BOOKS

Much of the inspiration for the Memories of Times Past books comes from the wonderful series of illustrated books published by A&C Black of Edinburgh between 1901 and 1917 called ‘The Twenty Shilling Series’. The series eventually ran to more than ninety volumes, each with – for those
days – an almost incredible number of full colour plates; some had a hundred! Each plate used the then-revolutionary three-colour printing process, allowing the work of a specially commisisoned artist to be reproduced with enormous precision and impact.

For the first time readers were able to see realistic images of faraway countries in colour without having to visit an art gallery. And the quality of the colour printing means that even today the images look as fresh and enticing as they did a hundred years ago.
